Bassist and composer Michael Bede Dunlop is an emerging voice in British jazz, working across electric and double bass in contemporary jazz and other improvisatory settings. His recent writing centres on upright as the primary voice, drawing influences from European jazz, Northumbrian folk and free improvisation into a spacious and collaborative sound. The music is defined by strong melodies and ensemble interplay, with compositions that favour narrative over technical showiness. Early Spring 2026 marked the release of his debut album Bede, which showcases pianist Finn Carter, alto saxophonist Albert Hills Wright and drummer Dave Adsett. With credits as versatile as Loyle Carner, Geordie Greep, and Fat Dog, these in-demand musicians form an ensemble grounded in trust that pushes at the boundaries of jazz in the UK. All three original members are present for this performance at Zeffirellis - not a common occurrence for such highly in-demand performers!
Finn Carter's 2024 debut Hymn For My Dad provides proof of his place as one of the most important emerging artists from London's jazz scene, frequently selling out prestigious venues such as Ronnie Scott's with his quartet. He is currently in the midst of an exciting residency at the Vortex Jazz Club. Albert Hills Wright and Dunlop met during their studies at London's Guildhall. With vibrant melodic invention, he brings a unique energy both to his playing and compositions.Dave Adsett is a dynamic and sensitive drummer, working in a range of projects including international touring as an acclaimed session musician.
