August 30 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

Gwilym Simcock is one of the most gifted pianists and imaginative composers on the European scene, who has risen to international prominence through his work in recent years as a member of Pat Metheny’s group. Gwilym moves effortlessly between jazz and classical music with harmonic sophistication, a subtle dovetailing of musical traditions and jaw-dropping technique.

Tommy Smith Quartet – Embodying The Light, The Music of John Coltrane.

Tommy Smith – Tenor Saxophone; Pete Johnstone – Piano; Calum Gourlay – Double Bass; Sebastiaan De Krom – Drums.

Tommy Smith has established himself in the past 35 years as a major force in contemporary jazz, respected by his peers across the globe. His quartet’s interpretation of the spirit, repertoire and demands of the music of the great Coltrane quartet of the early 1960s is breathtaking in its scope and execution. Playing the gig without amplification – not even an announcement mic – and thus replicating the conditions to which the original band was accustomed, this is more than simply a tribute to one of the most influential musicians in jazz; it’s a powerful invocation of the dedication and skill that animated the original music.
