Unfurl

Jun
23

A fabulous, subtle and original fusion of jazz with Indian classical & folk traditions, quite unlike other experiments in the field, led by violinist Olivia Moore. Suffice it to say that Olivia cites the seminal Jan Garbarek/Zakir Hussain/John McLaughlin album 'Making Music' as a prime influence. If you like that, you'll love Unfurl. And if you're unfamiliar with such work, you still won't be disappointed!

"Moore herself can obviously play the violin with great dexterity, but for the most part she used it with economy and for this she must be credited; although this was her project, this was a group effort musically and it shows her maturity as a leader that she gave so much space to others involved." — Chris Ackerley, The Sound of Now

The Impossible Gentlemen; Adam Nussbaum, Gwilym Simcock, Steve Swallow, Mike Walker.

Jun
24

With their debut CD voted 2011 Album of the Year in Mojo and elsewhere, this breathtaking transatlantic supergroup returns to Europe for a short tour, and once more happy circumstance means that we're able to present them in the intimacy of the Jazz Bar. For those who know the work of the individuals in the band, no introduction is needed. For those who don't, click the link below; nothing short of a lengthy essay here could do justice to the breadth, longevity and quality of the careers of the individual players. Space is limited for this show, and we expect it to sell out, so early booking is advised.

"This shimmering jewel of style and substance is jazz at its most exalted, and simply has to be heard. Here's a crude and approximate map reference, but one that gets close to the buried treasure.  Imagine guitarist Pat Metheny's trio masterpiece, Day Trip (Nonesuch, 2007), add a pianist of commensurate genius, and you are banging on the disc's front door. It is that good". All About Jazz.

Trefor Owen Quartet

30

The Magic Beans

Jul
14

Two of the North-West’s most inventive jazz players combine in a trio with one of its most distinctive vocalists in a unique jazz-pop crossover, covering a very unusual but instantly recognisable repertoire. Let this 5-star press review of their recent album say the rest;

‘The Magic Beans are a trio of guitar, bass and vocals. Uli Elbracht (guitar) and Matt Owens (bass) are self-effacing accompanists: they provide minimal velvet for the jewel of Zoe Chiotis’ voice, which is magical (the right word) in its smoothness, nuance and tenderness. This exquisite vocal instrument is deployed on an eclectic song selection. She charms on It Must Be Love, sparkles on The Beat Goes On, and removes the sting of For All We Know with breathy, light sweetness. Most surprising of all, Chiotis transforms a desert into paradise on a wonderfully lilting Horse With No Name.’ (Al Brownlee, Manchester Evening News)

Fast establishing a national reputation, Tyneside-based vocalist covers the contemporary & standard repertoires in a fine trio featuring bass and guitar.

LWT

Jul
28

LWT have played together since 2005, when Lawrence Woof and Andy Boothman met as members of the popular salsa band Mojito. The trio’s distinctive sound emerged as collateral damage during some dangerous manoeuvres in Cuban jazz. With the addition of mercurial percussionist Ben McCabe this became a natural vehicle for Lawrence’s compositional ideas and also for an eclectic collection of covers ranging from Eric Satie to Kylie Minogue by way of Nick Drake and the Stranglers.

Chameleon

Aug
04

Celebrating 30 years on the road this year, Chameleon specialises in a brand of feel-good groove-orientated jazz-funk for which it has established a loyal following and a solid reputation in the UK and abroad.  Mixing inventive arrangements of the work of the masters with original material from current and past members, the band combines disciplined musicianship with a sense of fun. Featured tonight is the great guitarist Gary Boyle, a true legend of British jazz fusion with an incredible CV and now a regular member of the band. Tonight's performance replaces the one cancelled during February's blizzards, which saw band, audience and venue staff stranded far and wide. It has been known to snow in Cumbria in August.
