Leo Richardson Quartet

Dec
02

‘I can’t remember hearing a more impressive debut…..music as good as this is beyond category’.

That’s Dave Gelly, the Observer’s jazz critic, reviewing Leo Richardson’s debut album, ‘The Chase’, in October 2017.

Praise indeed, and a perfect opportunity to find out why tonight. Leo Richardson is widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading young tenor saxophonists, best known for his honest, straight-ahead, contemporary hard-bop style. His most significant influences include John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Dexter Gordon, Horace Silver and Art Blakey. In 2009, Leo was awarded a scholarship to study jazz at the prestigious Trinity College of Music,  and in 2013 graduated with a first class degree. Since then he has come to prominence through his work with a diverse range of artists from Kylie Minogue & Jamie Cullum to the Heritage Orchestra and Ronnie Scott’s house band.

The quartet features standout players in their own right, including pianist Rick Simpson, winner of the Yamaha Scholarship Prize for Outstanding Jazz Musicians

Vibe-ology

Dec
16

A relative newcomer to the Northern jazz scene, Vibe-ology puts an unusual spin on the traditional organ quartet format. Led by vibraphonist John Settle, the group is inspired by similar line-ups led by organist "Big” John Patton in the ‘60s and vibist Bobby Hutcherson in the early ‘00s.

Playing standards but also rarely-heard yet tuneful material, the band plays the music of such jazz and blues greats as vibists Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson and Cal Tjader, Hammond organists Jimmy Smith and John Patton and guitarists Wes Montgomery, Kenny Burrell and many more.

A fascinating collection of sounds and colours from a seldom-seen and unusual instrumentation playing jazz, blues, latin and funk.
